The Past Simple is used to tell a story that occurred in the past that has no direct relevance to the present. It takes the form of VERB+ed, although there are many irregular forms. The following text exemplifies its use: Zumbi was born free in Palmares in 1655, but was captured by the Portuguese when he was 6 years old. In 1670, however, he escaped and returned to his birthplace. In 1678, the governor of Pernambuco offered freedom for the people of Palmares. But Zumbi refused to accept while other Africans remained enslaved. Later, the Portuguese attacked Palmares and destroyed it. Zumbi survived for two years, but was captured and killed in 1695.
